Mont Sainte Anne World Cup Results

Return of the Rat and English dominance at Mont Sainte Anne

Delivering a top quality course for 25 years now Mont Sainte Anne came through again with a great race. The canadian mountain threw a spanner into the works from the get go when it delivered one of its signature afternoon rain on qualifying day. The effect caused top level riders including Aaron Gwin to crash spreading the talent throughout the race day field.

And it was Gwin that set the time to be on race day. Being one of the first riders down the hill Gwin set a solid time over 5 seconds ahead of anyone else and close to the fast qualifying times. Gwin's time held up for some time and started to look like it might go the distance until Loic Bruni's run.

Bruni, who has finished second in two world cups this year and is yet to win his first world cup destroyed Gwins time by over 5 seconds even with his chain coming off on the bottom part of the course. The day looked like it could be his day. Bruni's was proving impassable with only Josh Bryceland and Troy Brosnan to go. Even Greg Minnaar could not get within 2.5 seconds of Loics run.

Bryceland took off in his typical style of no pedal, just carry speed. Reports of Josh finally being 100% healthy and a good run in the previous world cup would be a tough combination to beat. Taking the fastest split at the top of course Bryceland was on a flyer. The next split would show that Josh gave back more than a second and was up by on .200 of a second. Bryceland never panicked and continued his flow on the short bottom section and maintained the .200 second margin to take the hot seat with the weekends fastest qualifier left.

Troy Brosnans run was a typical run for the Aussie. Super smooth and charging out of the gate.  Although down at the first split by about 1.5 seconds, Brosnan also make up most of the gap in the second sector - the main rock garden. It was now a question of if he could run a clean bottom section and have the stamina.  Brosnan cleaned the bottom section perfectly but could not make up the difference and finished just .225 seconds behind the Santa Cruz rider and .055 seconds behind early leader Loic Bruni who would once again take a second place spot on the box.

The best rider to watch went to Canadian Mark Wallace as his run though the rock garden was nothing short of amazing. Wallace took a far left line into the section and proceed to make small double jumps of the rocks in the section. The move was a bold one but Wallace executed it perfectly and missed all of the big holes that wreaked havoc on the racers. For Wallace's efforts he finished with his best world cup finished ever with a respectable 6th place.

The Womens race saw the return of Nicole Myriam who was returning after a two week absence due to injury. Nicole threw down a great run for a solid third place beating out Tahnee Seagraves for the third step on the podium. Second place went to current World Champion Manon Carpenter. While Carpenter road well, she was no match for the domination of Rachel Atherton who recorded her 4th win in a row with a huge 4 second margin. Emmeiine Ragot was forced to pull out of the race after breaking her ankle and elbow in a pre-race practice run off the big container drop near the finish.

Sadly there were no Americans in the womens race field.

The race was held under mostly clear skies with some occasional rain drops falling, but nothing that gave any rider an advantage or disadvantage.

The world cup moves right on to next week at Windham Resort for the American leg of the UCI tour. Windham Resort is located in upstate New York and is hosting its 5th world cup stop.
